AGM HEARS REPORTS OF PROGRESS, AND LACK OF PROGRESS

HOW THE SECTION SPOKE UP

Section President Milton Baker reported that there has been a little progress in gaining recognition for the rights of clinical faculty but several areas continue to resist change. He said the Section:

  • Spoke on behalf of clinical faculty to the Tripartite Committee reviewing the accreditation of the UBC Faculty of Medicine;
  • Spoke to the Dean of Medicine about issues important to clinical faculty, including the de-linking of hospital privileges and a requirement to teach, and the need for a dispute resolution mechanism to protect clinical faculty from abuse.
  • Spoke to the BCMA about including the right questions in the survey of BCMA members (carried out in August-September).

FINANCES

Outgoing Treasurer Dr. Dean Burrill reported that the Section currently has about 450 paid-up members and a strong bank balance to support future initiatives. He recommended the annual fee (reduced to $120 last year) not be lowered further. During the question period, several clinical faculty recommended measures to recruit additional members of the Section. For a full report, click here.

CLINICAL FACULTY ASSOCIATION FOUNDER: WITHOUT A “SYSTEM CHANGE” WE CANNOT HOPE TO TRAIN THE DOCTORS THAT B.C. NEEDS

In a farewell address, Dr. Angus Rae, co-founder of the University Clinical Faculty Association and retiring Board member of the Section, called on more clinicians to join the Section and encourage the BCMA to strongly represent clinical faculty and forge a partnership with the Faculty of Medicine, in place of the present “master-servant relationship.” He reviewed the history of dealings between clinical faculty and UBC and urged UBC and the BCMA to make a new beginning.
